Berlin: A Closer Look
The city of Berlin is the heart of Germany. It is the biggest of all
the cities of Germany. Many people from all over the world come in every
year to see the beauty of the city. There are many reasons why people
should consider visiting the city f Berlin. It boasts a very rich
history, culture, entertainment, and politics.
The oldest recorded towns and cities of Berlin date back from the later
part of the 12th century. These settlements were the areas of Spandau
and Kopenick. These two areas officially became a part of Berlin in
1920. The towns of Colln and Berlin were united politically and socially
in 1307 and they were called Berlin.
Frederick William who is also called “The Great Elector” opened the city
gates to French seeking asylum during the 17th century to promote
immigration after the Thirty Years War had destroyed many properties and
took the lives of many Berlin residents. The French made up twenty
percent of Berlins population by that time.
Berlin became the capital of Kingdom of Prussia under King Frederick I.
It became a division of the Province of Brandenburg early in the 19th
century. It became an independent city and was proclaimed as the capital
of the German Empire.
Perhaps the most famous person, character, or icon people can associate
with Germany is Adolf Hitler who was in command of the Nazis. They were
known for their cruelty especially to German Jews. They seize thousands
of Jews and sent them to prison, force labor, and even death. They also
caused major damage to the city of Berlin.
Germany was divided into two and so was Berlin. The Berlin Wall divided
the two cities into East and West part. Crossing this wall to get to the
other part was almost close to impossible for most people due to fear of
persecution.
When you visit Berlin, you will still notice that some part of the city
still reflect this rich history. See their unique architecture from tall
buildings to palaces to famous monuments and cathedrals.
